For songwriter Ian Henderson, the journey of crafting a song is a lifelong narrative.
Having had early songs published by Chappell Music (pre-Warner) in the early 1980s, it was during the mid-1980s that Ian’s sharp melodic instincts caught the attention of Des McKeogh, the formidable promotions chief behind classic British independent labels like Charisma and State Records. Over pints at The Crown and Two Chairmen on Dean Street in Soho, and afternoons at the Lingfield races, McKeogh mentored Ian and aggressively championed his material. The industry took note: in a featured interview with Songwriter Magazine, McKeogh explicitly named Ian Henderson as a rising artist to look out for.
Following his time under McKeogh’s wing, Ian’s momentum carried him into the late 1980s, where he caught the attention of Mike Cobb, of the music publisher Sesame Songs. This partnership took Ian into the hallowed rooms of Surrey Sound Studios—the iconic recording facility owned and operated by the late, legendary record producer Nigel Gray. Recording new material in the very studio where Gray famously shaped the signature sound of The Police (producing Outlandos d’Amour and Reggatta de Blanc), Ian further refined his commercial studio craft alongside some of the era’s finest engineering minds.
While the unpredictable wheels of the 80s music industry spun, Ian channeled his analytical mind into a successful career in FM software. Yet, the music never stopped. Throughout decades of shifting tech landscapes, Ian continued to quietly write, capturing the human experience in hooks and harmony.
Now retired from the tech industry, Ian has come full circle, returning to his first love completely. His contemporary material spans a rich, transatlantic tapestry: from the sophisticated chord structures and elegant lyricism of the Great American Songbook, to the driving melodies of traditional pop/rock and the heartfelt storytelling of country.
Free from corporate constraints, Ian Henderson’s music combines the polished craft of a golden era with a profound, mature perspective on life, time, and memory. The story that began in a smoke-filled Soho pub is finally ready for its finest chapter.
